Netflix is a wonderful thing. I'm watching a bunch of movies I haven't seen in years, among these is Robocop followed by Robocop 2.
I know, I know, some of you are thinking "Why would you want to rewatch that piece of **** after Robocop?" Because I liked, and still enjoy, the Robocop vs. RoboCain fight. It's in claymation and looks like something out of a 60's monster movie, but it's still fun. Thing is, as I watched I started thinking about all the fan rage that Terminator 3 provoked, and then how people reacted to Robocop 2 (and 3). Now if you've been here awhile you'll know I don't think T3 is a bad movie at all. It's an enjoyable Popcorn Summer Action movie. Of course it's not up to T2, but it's not actually a bad film, like...Robocop 2. And Robocop 2 is a bad film. You want to look at an example of a franchise killer, like Neverending Story 2, this is a good one. On a lot of levels Robocop 2 just fails. Mind you, the guy directing it is Irvin Kershner, the guy who directed The Empire Strikes Back, and it was written by first Frank Miller then Walon Green (who wrote my all time favorite Western, The Wild Bunch). And it's a complete mess. You can blame the studio for this if you want, but if Frank Miller's Robocop really is the comic version of the screenplay Miller originally wrote, then they actually had to salvage a really bad script. But Robocop 2 completely derailed the franchise, and that's what I want to talk about. Which movie was actually worse for it's series, Terminator 3 or Robocop 2? You know which side of this I come down on, but what about you guys?

It occurred to me that, of all things, we lack an official thread to discuss (um.. in my case ridicule) all things T3/4.
--- I came across this brilliant little snippet of awesomeness from John Brancato, one of the writers (is it possible to call them writers?) behind T3 and T4. And Catwoman. about their initial plans for T3: "Arnold shows up and tries to kill rich, smug John Connor. A female terminator, a nanotech assemblage of micro-bots, strives to protect him. Yet it turns out Arnold was sent by the Resistance-- and the nano-chick is Skynet's most nefarious creation of all. See, after the first two pairs of terminators were sent back from 2029 for the first two movies, JC revealed himself to be evil-- a Skynet deep-cover agent. He destroyed/will destroy the human resistance from within. This is all because the female nano-terminator supposedly defending him actually infects him in the present day, with a nanobot that bores deep into his brain. So after Connor betrays humanity in 2032, his mortified wife Kate sends Arnold back to kill John Connor in 2003. (Sarah Connor is already dead of cancer, by the way.) In the film's action, the Arnold terminator fails, nano-bltch kills true love Kate-- but Judgment Day seems to have been prevented yet again (although Connor still has a scrap of Skynet inside his head, the-end-or-is-it?). This script was, admittedly, pretty insane, trippy and multiversive. We were out to conjure some of the dizzy absurdity of the first Terminator. I was happy with the script. It nearly got us fired. Thanks to Mostow's desperate lobbying on our behalf, we were given a few weeks for one last chance." - John Brancato, Screenwriter T3 & T4. If only they had been fired... *sigh*

Just dreaming of someday here, but assume that the franchise doesn't die in litigation, expire from lack of interest or devolve into a kiddie cartoon. What would you want T5 or T6 to be about?
I have fantasy of Terminator 5 starting with Kyle Reese on judgement day (or post judgement day depending on timeline). Wandering through a ruined world, discovering the metal hunters. The plot would follow him as he evaded pusuit from the machines, joined up with the resistance and fell in with John Connor. Tell the tale of how he learned about Sarah, and lost his heart to the mother of the future. We could follow the war against skynet right up to the end, and finale with his leap to the past. Brother Derek optional, but I for one would rather see a separation of the series from the films. Terminator 6 could be a story that begins right after humanity's victory over skynet. With the Big Bad supercomputer gone, many humans would be ready to trash all AI, even ones who willfully aided the resistance. Of course some humans would see sentient AI as a new form of life, deserving of rights and freedoms. This kind of plot could go a number of different ways, but should avoid any hackneyed I Robot cliches (apologies to Asimov, but he done it already). I think it could be interesting to explore wether humans feel some kind of responsibility to a new species that it created. Well, those are mine, comment on'em or give us your own.
