The Future of This Community - Where do we go from here?
Oct 21 2010, 12:26 PM EDT | Post edited: Oct 21 2010, 4:32 PM EDT
It's been almost a year since we created this place. We had problems with the Wetpaint-appointed administration, so we moved. Now we have problems with Wetpaint once again, but this time it is of a more technical nature. Becaue of the change in direction the company has chosen, all wikis hosted here suffer from more and more problems, and as it is, it's hard not to wonder how long we will survive. Thus, it is once again time to ask ourselves a very important question: what the fuck should we do?

There are those who feel we must move to a new place if we want to survive and there are those who disagree, as they believe it would kill what remains of our community. Both of these thoughts have merit. It's true that a second move might decimate what remains of our numbers, but it is equally true that we're finished even if we stay. Either the constant technical problems will kill us, or people will simply move on anyway as time goes by.

It is the view of the administration here that a second move, whatever the risks associated with it, would at least give us a fighting chance. It might also be an opportunity for us to revitalize our community by broading our horizons a bit, perhaps by dealing with more than just TSCC and/or Terminator in general. But - this is only if people are actually interested in doing this, and that's where this thread comes in.

So, do you agree or disagree with these thoughts? Naturally, if nobody is interested then we'll stay here and make the best of our situation. If not, then we must decide what kind of place our new home should be. So please take this opportunity to voice your opinion on what you think we should do! Your thoughts will determine our future!

Topics can sit for hours without a new post at the top. This forum is almost dead. Any move will most likely only be a negative. And what is the problem with Wet Paint? It's providing a place for a forum to post things. It's not like there's any new material for TSCC to post.

Almost everything which has been discussed that has some worth has been. The most recent discussion has been an ill informed thread about the affects of radiation from the isotope gun thing doodad. I'm surprised no one has made a thread detailing the choices of Cameron's arm glove things and if the colors are symbolic of a growing awareness of humanity. <-- Ridiculous. Because there is nothing of any substance to post about fans have nothing to talk about unless it's some crazy theory which can simply be answered with a "Dude, you're reading too far into it" type of answer.

I don't think we should move.

But I think we should be prepared to.

These are two very different things. Yes, Wetpaint is buggy right now. That's not a reason to move. But it is a reason to get ready to move, in light of the cutbacks in service from the company.

Why? Because they may decide to phase out their web forums. In which case, moving the forum is no longer a choice, we have to do it. That means being prepared. Having backups for content, backups for links, a place to land already worked out, all of that. It's like a fire evacuation plan for a building: you have everything worked out in advance for the day you need it.

Yeah, it's a lot of work that we may not need. Fine. I say be prepared. Until such a day arises, when Wetpaint closes this wiki down, we should stay put.

The service we are looking into (nothing decided) is wikidot.com. From what I can tell, It has pretty much every feature that wetpaint has and everything we wish it had.

There's no character limit on posts (and if there is, I don't think it'll ever be hit). It seems that they allow almost all forms of embedding and without the need of using untaint. The wiki's themselves seem to be very customizable as well. From the reading I've done so far the sites can be edited using custom css (which means custom themes).

The TOS for the site is pretty interesting as well. I've been doing some reading on the forums and it seems they are pretty flexible on what can be added to the site and forums. I would ask you guys to read these two thread: http://community.wikidot.com/forum/t-47278/ http://community.wikidot.com/forum/t-7940/

This site pretty much has the same amount of activity it had last year. It was never very active, but it was and is more active than any of the other sites.
--
Where should I begin?

1) There's been a multiple problems with wetpaint that has led to threads no longer updating. Which requires making a new thread anyway.

2) They dropped some people from their staff and now when problems happen (like what is happening now) it takes a longer for them to fix whatever is wrong.

3) We have no idea how long this site or any of the others will last. They seem to moving away from supporting these types of sites.

I'm sorry but not everyone is done discussing TSCC and Terminator like you are, Bryan. Not everyone thinks it's all a waste of time... There's still people that want to discuss the show, movies, and fanfiction.

@Bryan: Yes, we have long since run out of fresh topics to discuss. Which is why I proposed that expanding beyond TSCC might be a good idea, in the event that we move.

@GF: Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if they close the service eventually. It makes sense for them to do so, given the company's change of direction. In my view, it's only a question of when.

@Kaotic: I think that place looks real appealing. Especially now, when Wetpaint is as buggy as it is. Christ, every time I hit reload right now, this thread vanishes along with a number of recent posts, only to reappear the next time. It's really annoying.

I think it comes down to this: How long can we all tolerate these problems? Hell, I'm having trouble viewing this thread because it keeps disappearing from their servers (due to some of them being out of sync).

We've been expressing problems with the site for about two months now. I would be fine if it was just our site, but it's all of them. That means we can't just move back over to the red wiki and continue from there... What I might do is start backing up everything we have on this site and even stuff on the red wiki; that way if we have to move I can slowly put back all the stuff we had. That kind of migration would take some time but that's fine. I just want to have a back up site--and I'll get started working on one in my free time--ready to go just encase.

Again, do not make a move now. Be prepared to, work things out, back up the content, do all of that, but do not make a move now.

Yes, we should be patient with Wetpaint. Yes, I know the problems have been going on for a month. That's why you should prepare to move. But don't do anything unless Wetpaint makes an announcement that forums are closing.

Exactly. Now we have had more problems in last two months than we have had in last two years. And it wouldn't really be problem if this problems would happen once in a week or like that, but it seems to be happening daily bases now.

Well obviously this because Wetpaint have changed it's direction and reduced employees and I wouldn't be surprised if they would completely quiet keeping up this wikis, eventually. Why, because I'm sure that Wetpaint is now aware of the problems, their reducing money and employees have caused to wikis and I doubt that they would hire more people or acquire more resources to improve the way how wikis work, not after they just axed those. So, the next step is pretty much that they will completely cease these wikis. (Is really any of Wetpaint wikis really active anymore.) or then they will at least cut some, less active once and in that case I guess this wiki belongs to those.

As far as I'm concerned, vBulletin is the de facto standard for internet forums. Places like wetpaint are absolute horeshit, and just get in the way of posting content.

It's not about not having a desire to discuss TSCC, kaotic, and way to put words in my mouth. Surprise there. It's about inane topics like the isoptope gun "curing" Sarah's cancer. It's about reading too deep into things which are just there.

You want a good visual with pretty pictures about what some of these discussion are like watch this: http://www.southparkstudios.com/full-episodes/s14e02-the-tale-of-scrotie-mcboogerballs

Some things just have NO meaning in them. they are just there. Discussing every little thing on the show is pointless. Like I said, it's like discussing the color choices of Cameron's arm gloves and then claiming the color symbolism is part of her growing humanity. Reading waaaaay too much into things.

Yet somehow you translated that as meaning that we shouldn't discuss anything about TSCC or Terminator. Jeezus, kaotic, get a clue.

Actually, the wikidots has some really awesome posting features including some of vBulletin's.

I think we'd see more problems migrating to a site like that than creating our own.

Meh, people like to ignore points when it's inconvenient for them.

Ridiculous topics on things said in the show which have no meaning don't really do much. Compare the isotope gun to the Skynet cyberspace thread. One of them is actually worthwhile while the other is someone reading way too much into the dialogue and failing at basic science.*

*even by terminator standards

It seems deader than red wiki.

That and wikidots allows a lot of customization.

Any new place we build from scratch will be even deader until we migrate there and breathe life into it, so the current activity level is kind of a moot point.

Terminatorfiles.com is a cool website, and it's the first thing that pops up when you google "terminator forum." Any time any new content is released (books, comics, games, T5, big news, etc.) it's going to be one of the first places people look when they want to discuss said new stuff.

Just a suggestion.

Well, it's not a bad suggestion, it's just that we have people that only post in their fanficiton thread or gaming thread, etc... Now, if someone is only wanting to discuss Terminator and TSCC then that site would be fine. But when we have a community that like to discuss Terminator, gaming, fanfiction and other things rather than just Terminator / TSCC in general; then those sties don't work to well.

Also, our members seem to like to have the freedom to post pretty much anything they want and I'm not too sure sites like terminatorfiles would allow a lot of the stuff on this site to be posted.

I am ok with moving but it would certainly harm the community. Not everybody would move too.

Joining a different and already existing community has some benefits but it has to fit.

Yeah, t-files.net is way too strictly moderated to really be a good fit for this community. Not a lot of OT discussion and simply posting in the wrong sub-forum is enough to get a thread locked down. I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing, but it would certainly clash with the more laid back attitude that we have going on here.

I agree with Godfather when he says we shouldn't move (at least not yet) because it hasn't become intolerable yet, imho, and I also agree with Kaotic as to where we should go to if we were to move.
A move would indeed be better for a place of our own we could easily and completely customize and include all sorts of OT stuff, as we do here.
