Something Else
Jun 22 2011, 5:02 AM EDT
At first, I wasn't sure what to think of this story. It had a John that was hard to understand or relate to, but as the story progressed from chapter to chapter I found myself enjoying it more and more, and John has become a really cool character. Cameron is great in his story too and has a good amount of development. I have to say that this is one of the first dialog based stories that I've liked in a long time and I can't wait to see where this goes.

I do them when my brain is worn out looking at words. If I could do the sort of stuff others like AndyTGD do with Photoshop I'd be doing that more than writing! It helps to try to get the mood. The Wiki's best feature is letting us post pics and use colour to make something extra out of our stories. I put the pic above on the Chapter page because it seemed like a nice teaser. BTW, if you roll over the pics on the opening page the pop-up comment is sometimes amusing, sometimes informative. Oh, and thanks to Morded for starting the Thread. Do you find this valuable? |

I enjoy the story, and the characters are pretty cool. But I am waiting for the characters to do more than the little flirting that we've seen from them. I think it'll probably be subtle for a while since the story line if somewhat following the shows storyline. After all the subtly in the show, I personally read fan fiction for more than subtle, but that's just me. That being said, I can't wait to read your next chapter.Do you find this valuable? |

![]() Because you demanded it! You couldn't wait to see it happen! Yes, "it" happens, in the momentous, no-holds-barred all-action finale! See! Sarah Connor inexplicably time-travel to the future, only to meet her fate! Again! See! Cromartie inexplicably time-travel to the future, only to meet his fate! Again! See! You almost fell for it, right? It all kicks off in Chapter 31 (of 30).

I've read through the fifth chapter. You write good dialog; I love the back and forth repartee John and Cameron have developed, though my two (opinionated) criticisms would be that: a) Cameron is *too* human. It's not as bad as in some fics where she's crying all the time or indistinguishable from a normal teenage girl, but--and I admit I'm the minority in this--I prefer my Cameron more inhuman and pragmatically sociopathic in her portrayal. After all, Cameron had no qualms about killing the waitress she'd tied up. Presumably she wouldn't have any qualms about killing anyone else either, if they'd gotten in her way. Picture Cameron methodically executing an eight year old witness, then slipping off to a diner for some strawberries and waffles without even the shadow of remorse(*-see note below). That's what makes Cameron Cameron (and by human standards makes her a monster), but in this story that's a little too downplayed for my taste. b) John's a jerk. Not really so much a criticism, since he was a jerk in the series, but it does seem like the Jameron in the story's stuck in a loop where Cameron and John begin to bond but then John pushes her away because she's not real or whatever. Ultimately this kind of prejudice is irrelevant and misleading; even after John gets over Cameron being a machine, there's still the unavoidable problem of despite the fact that Cameron's picked up a large repertoire of human mannerisms, she's inherently inhuman. Leave aside the fact that she's a terminator; pretend she's human. She's still a natural sociopath, which makes her not only a very scary robot, but also a very scary person (and even her amnesiac period when she thought she was human didn't seem to change this, which gives the idea that she's unlikely to really 'learn' empathy). If John's to have any beef with Cameron, it should be this, and not that she happens to be a robot or reminds him of his destiny. If I were to have a third criticism, it'd be that five chapters in there's yet to be real plot other than domestic Jameron situations. However, at the end of five it looks like John and Cameron are actually going to do something proactive, so I'll wait and see. Anyway, sorry if I'm being overly critical, but I feel that a review without criticism is worthless. And also, let me reiterate in saying that you're writing is very good. I'll leave more comments after I read the rest of your story. (*)--In the show there was Eric the Librarian, but then while Cameron seemed to show genuine concern for Eric, there's no reason to think she wouldn't have killed him if he'd become a liability. In fact, at the end of the episode she smoothly makes friends with Eric's replacement without batting an eye. She may have liked Eric the same way she likes peachy cream smoothies, but in the end he was simply an asset and readily replaceable. Don't get me wrong, I *like* Cameron, but I like her for who she is, and don't like her being whitewashed. Do you find this valuable? |

However, when John tells says: "No you." She replies with: "Not anymore." and smiles slightly. I think that means that Cameron no longer sees herself as JUST a killer. This is something that was building up from Complications when they talked about the turtle and empathy. Someone else mentioned this as well in another thread a long time ago. Cameron didn't kill a single innocent person from Complication to Born to Run. I think it was to show that Cameron was changing, growing beyond her programming, and she didn't need John to order her not to kill like he did with Uncle Bob, she learned that on her own. She is a Terminator, and that means that deep down, she is a killer, but that isn't all she is. Human beings by our very nature are killers, that animal instinct is programmed (if you will) into our mind from evolution. But we are able to choose not to kill people and Cameron does the same thing, and that's shown in Born to Run. |
